From the chapter: Classification of Flows: Fluid, Viscosity, Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Behaviour, and Flow Regimes

Which statement correctly distinguishes a fluid from a solid?

Show the answer and why

Answer: C.

The defining property of a fluid is continuous deformation under any sustained shear stress. A fluid at rest can carry a normal stress, the pressure, so the claim that it carries no stress of any kind is the tempting but wrong one: it is only the shear stress that must vanish at rest. Fluids can be compressible and real fluids are viscous, so constant density and zero viscosity are not defining properties.
