Reading Comprehension —

The passage is mainly about…", "best states the central idea"प्रत्येक अनुच्छेद का पहला और अंतिम वाक्य।
According to the passage…", "The author states that…"
It can be inferred…", "The passage suggests…", "The author implies…"
प्रसंग में शब्दार्थ"most nearly means", "as used in the passage, X means"उस शब्द वाला वाक्य।
The tone of the passage is…", "the author's attitude towards X is…"मूल्यांकन के शब्द — admirable, merely, unfortunately, one wonders whether।
The writer mentions X mainly in order to…"X से पहले और बाद का वाक्य।
The most suitable title for the passage is…"
NOT true / EXCEPT"All of the following EXCEPT…", "Which is NOT stated in the passage?"

According to the passage" वाले प्रश्न में, तथा EXCEPT प्रश्न के तीन निशानों में।
It can be inferred", "suggests", "implies" वाले तथा प्रयोजन-सम्बंधी प्रश्नों में।
जिस विकल्प में all, none, always, never, only, must, entirely, proves, impossible हो, उसे काट दें — जब तक गद्यांश स्वयं उतना ही निरपेक्ष न हो। परीक्षा-गद्य सावधान भाषा लिखता है: वह कहता है most firms, usually, tends to।

When offices closed in large numbers and employees began working from their homes, many managers expected productivity to collapse. It did not. What changed instead was the shape of the working day. Freed from commuting, employees started earlier, broke for longer in the afternoon, and returned to their screens in the evening. The hours were not fewer; they had merely been rearranged.

The gains, however, were unevenly shared. An employee with a spare room and a reliable connection flourished; one sharing a small flat with children and the noise of the street did not. Seniority mattered too. A manager who had spent a decade building relationships in an office could sustain them over a video link, because the trust already existed. A new recruit who had never met a colleague in person had no such reserve to draw upon, and the informal learning that happens beside a desk simply did not occur.

This is why most firms have settled on a mixture rather than a choice. Concentrated work — writing, coding, analysis — is done at home, where interruptions are fewer. Days in the office are kept for the tasks that need bodies in a room: training the newly hired, arguing over an unfinished plan, repairing a strained relationship. The office has stopped being the place where work is done and has become the place where people are made into colleagues.

Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage? (a) Home working reduced the number of hours that employees worked. (b) The purpose of the office has shifted from producing work to building relationships. (c) Managers were right to fear a collapse in productivity. (d) New recruits should not be permitted to work from home.
According to the passage, what happened to the length of the working day of employees who worked from home? (a) It grew shorter because commuting was removed. (b) It grew longer because evenings were added to it. (c) It stayed the same in length but was rearranged. (d) The passage does not comment on it.
It can be inferred that a new recruit found remote work harder than a manager did because (a) new recruits were given more work than managers. (b) new recruits had no stock of established trust and missed the learning that happens near a desk. (c) new recruits had slower internet connections than managers. (d) managers were allowed to visit the office and recruits were not.
In the phrase "no such reserve to draw upon", the word "reserve" most nearly means (a) a store built up in advance. (b) shyness of manner. (c) a booking made ahead of time. (d) a protected area of forest.
  5. प्रश्न 5 (EXCEPT)। All of the following are given in the passage as reasons why the gains from home working were unevenly shared, EXCEPT (a) the amount of space available at home. (b) the reliability of the internet connection. (c) the employee's length of service. (d) the employee's level of pay.

कुंजी: 1 (b), 2 (c), 3 (b), 4 (a), 5 (d)।

  1. प्रश्न 1 → (b)। अंतिम वाक्य यह परिवर्तन सीधे कहता है: कार्यालय "has stopped being the place where work is done and has become the place where people are made into colleagues", और तीसरा अनुच्छेद वही विभाजन व्यवहार में दिखाता है। विकल्प (a) "The hours were not fewer" का उलटा है। विकल्प (c) का खंडन "It did not" कर देता है।
  2. प्रश्न 2 → (c)। एक वाक्य निर्णय कर देता है: "The hours were not fewer; they had merely been rearranged."
  3. प्रश्न 3 → (b)। दो कथित तथ्य एक कदम में जुड़ते हैं: नए कर्मी के पास "no such reserve to draw upon" (पहले से बना विश्वास नहीं) और "the informal learning that happens beside a desk simply did not occur"।
  4. प्रश्न 4 → (a)। रखकर दोबारा पढ़ें: प्रबंधक के पास दस वर्ष का विश्वास था, नए कर्मी के पास "no such store built up in advance to draw upon" — draw upon का सहप्रयोग स्वयं किसी संचय की माँग करता है।
  5. प्रश्न 5 → (d)। तीन पर निशान लगाइए: स्थान — "a spare room" बनाम "a small flat"; कनेक्शन — "a reliable connection"; सेवा-अवधि — "Seniority mattered too", जिसमें दस वर्ष वाले प्रबंधक की तुलना नए कर्मी से है।

A city is warmer than the countryside around it, and the difference is not small. Brick, asphalt and concrete absorb sunlight through the day and release it slowly through the night, so a built-up district may still be several degrees warmer than open fields long after sunset. Engineers call this the urban heat island. It is produced not by any single mistake but by the ordinary materials of construction and by the removal of the vegetation that once covered the ground.

Trees interrupt the process in two ways. Their canopies intercept sunlight before it reaches a surface that would store it, and the water they release through their leaves cools the surrounding air, much as a wet cloth cools a warm forehead. A street with a continuous canopy can be noticeably cooler at noon than an identical street without one — a difference residents feel long before any instrument records it.

Yet trees are the first casualty when a road is widened. They occupy land, their roots lift pavements, and their benefits arrive slowly while the cost of planting arrives at once. A sapling planted this year shades nobody for a decade, and the official who plants it will have been transferred before it does. Where cities have kept their canopies, it is usually because a rule protected the trees from the discretion of whoever happened to be in charge, and not because each successive administration chose shade over speed.

The most suitable title for the passage would be (a) The Chemistry of Concrete. (b) Why Cities Are Hotter, and Why Their Trees Still Fall. (c) A History of Road Widening. (d) How Air Temperature Is Measured.
According to the passage, the two ways in which trees reduce urban heat are (a) absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. (b) shading surfaces and releasing water that cools the air. (c) lifting pavements and occupying land. (d) reflecting sunlight and storing heat through the night.
The comparison with a wet cloth on a warm forehead is used mainly in order to (a) explain in familiar terms how evaporating water cools the air. (b) show that trees consume a great deal of water. (c) argue that cloth is a better building material than concrete. (d) prove that instruments are unnecessary.
The author mentions that the official who plants a sapling will have been transferred before it gives shade in order to suggest that (a) officials are usually dishonest. (b) saplings ought to be planted only by residents. (c) the person who bears the cost of planting is not the person who will be credited with the benefit, so the incentive to plant is weak. (d) the transfer of officials should be stopped.
According to the last paragraph, cities that have kept their tree cover have done so mainly because (a) their administrations valued shade more than speed. (b) their soil was better suited to trees. (c) a rule kept the matter out of the hands of individual officials. (d) their roads were never widened.

कुंजी: 1 (b), 2 (b), 3 (a), 4 (c), 5 (c)।

  2. प्रश्न 2 → (b)। "in two ways" के बाद का वाक्य उन्हें गिनाता है: छत्रक "intercept sunlight before it reaches a surface that would store it", तथा "the water they release through their leaves cools the surrounding air"।
  3. प्रश्न 3 → (a)।
  5. प्रश्न 5 → (c)। अंतिम वाक्य शब्द-दर-शब्द उत्तर दे देता है: छत्रक बचे "because a rule protected the trees from the discretion of whoever happened to be in charge, and not because each successive administration chose shade over speed" — जिससे (a) वही विकल्प बन जाता है जिसका गद्यांश स्पष्ट खंडन करता है।

Most students prepare for an examination by reading their notes again, and then again. The method feels effective, which is precisely the difficulty. Each rereading makes the page more familiar, and familiarity is easily mistaken for knowledge. The student closes the book confident, walks into the hall, and discovers that recognising a sentence and producing it are two different skills.

Researchers who study memory describe a more uncomfortable alternative. Shut the book and try to recall what was on the page before checking. The attempt is effortful and, at first, humbling: blanks appear where the student expected fluency. But the effort itself is what strengthens the memory. Retrieval is not merely a test of learning; it is an act of learning. What is dragged out of the mind with difficulty is far harder to lose than what was gently read in.

The practical lesson is not that reading is useless but that it must be interrupted. Read a section, close the book, write down what you can, and only then reopen it to find what you missed. The gaps you discover are the most valuable information available to you, because they mark exactly the places where confidence and competence have parted company. A student who never tests himself is not studying; he is rehearsing the pleasant feeling of having studied.

The author's main purpose in the passage is to (a) prove that reading notes is a waste of time. (b) recommend that recall be built into study, because effortful retrieval strengthens memory. (c) describe the manner in which examinations are set. (d) argue that confident students perform better than anxious ones.
According to the passage, rereading feels effective because (a) it takes less time than writing does. (b) it increases familiarity, which is confused with knowledge. (c) teachers generally recommend it. (d) it removes every blank from the memory.
As used in the passage, "fluency" most nearly means (a) ready, effortless recall. (b) elegance of handwriting. (c) command of a foreign language. (d) speed of reading aloud.
Which study plan would the author most probably approve of? (a) Reading the chapter four times on the night before the examination. (b) Underlining every important line in three colours. (c) Reading a section, closing the book, writing down what can be recalled, and then checking. (d) Copying the notes out neatly twice.
  5. प्रश्न 5 (NOT stated)। Which of the following is NOT stated in the passage? (a) Retrieval is itself an act of learning. (b) The gaps a student discovers are valuable information. (c) Reading should be given up altogether. (d) What is recalled with effort is harder to forget.

कुंजी: 1 (b), 2 (b), 3 (a), 4 (c), 5 (c)।

  1. प्रश्न 1 → (b)। तीसरा अनुच्छेद सिफ़ारिश आदेश-रूप में देता है ("Read a section, close the book, write down what you can") और दूसरा उसका कारण ("the effort itself is what strengthens the memory"), अतः (b) प्रयोजन और आधार दोनों पकड़ता है। (a) तीव्र-शब्द छननी में गिर जाता है और उसका स्पष्ट खंडन है: "not that reading is useless"।
  2. प्रश्न 2 → (b)। लगातार दो वाक्य यह दे देते हैं: "Each rereading makes the page more familiar, and familiarity is easily mistaken for knowledge."
  4. प्रश्न 3 → (a)।
  5. प्रश्न 5 → (c)। बाकी तीन की पुष्टि कीजिए, तीनों उपस्थित हैं: (a) "Retrieval is not merely a test of learning; it is an act of learning"; (b) "The gaps you discover are the most valuable information available to you"; (d) "What is dragged out of the mind with difficulty is far harder to lose"। विकल्प (c) केवल अनुपस्थित नहीं है — गद्यांश उसका स्पष्ट शब्दों में खंडन करता है: "The practical lesson is not that reading is useless"।

  • तीव्र-शब्द छननी लगाएँ: all, none, always, never, only, must, proves।
  • "Most nearly means"

"The bicycle is the only vehicle that becomes more useful as a city becomes more crowded. A car occupies the same road space whether it carries one person or five, and it must be parked at both ends of every journey. A bicycle needs a strip of tarmac and a railing. In a dense city, therefore, the cheapest way to move more people is not to build more road but to give a little of the existing road to bicycles."

    1. in a crowded city, reallocating a part of the existing road to bicycles moves more people at the lowest cost.
    2. cars should be banned from all city streets.
    3. bicycles are more comfortable to ride than cars are to drive.
    4. cities should stop building new roads of any kind.

A — in a crowded city, reallocating a part of the existing road to bicycles moves more people at the lowest cost.

4 "the cheapest way is not to build more road" को सार्वत्रिक निषेध बना देता है, जो एक कदम आगे है।
"A short daytime nap improves alertness for the rest of the afternoon, but only if it is short. Sleep moves through stages, and a nap of about twenty minutes ends before the deepest stage begins. Wake a sleeper in the middle of that deep stage and he feels worse than before he lay down — heavy, slow and irritable for some time afterwards. The trick, therefore, is to set an alarm rather than to trust the body to wake itself."

    1. the nap is taken in the afternoon rather than the morning.
    2. he is woken during the deepest stage of sleep.
    3. the nap lasts about twenty minutes.
    4. an alarm is used to wake him.

B — he is woken during the deepest stage of sleep.

    तीसरा वाक्य सीधे यही कहता है: "Wake a sleeper in the middle of that deep stage and he feels worse than before he lay down."
"The village had one bus a day. It left at six in the morning, so anyone with business in the town had to sleep there overnight or come back the following day. When the road was surfaced and a second bus was added at four in the afternoon, the attendance register of the town school changed within a month: girls whose parents had refused to let them stay away overnight now travelled to the town and returned the same evening."

    1. the village had no school building of its own.
    2. the girls of the village had no interest in going to school.
    3. some girls stayed away from the town school because attending it meant spending a night away from home.
    4. there was no road at all between the village and the town.

C — some girls stayed away from the town school because attending it meant spending a night away from home.

    दो कथित तथ्य एक ही कदम में जुड़ते हैं: केवल छह बजे की बस होने पर यात्री को "had to sleep there overnight", और जिन लड़कियों ने जाना आरंभ किया वे वही थीं "whose parents had refused to let them stay away overnight"।
"A good index is written, not generated. The indexer must decide which of a book's thousands of nouns a reader will actually look for, choose one form of each term and cross-refer the rest, and place entries where a hurried reader will find them. Software can list every word on every page; it cannot judge which of them matters. That judgement is why a hand-made index is still commissioned separately, long after the text has been typeset."

    1. deciding which terms a reader will actually look for
    2. choosing one form of a term and cross-referring the others
    3. judging which words matter
    4. correcting the author's spelling

D — correcting the author's spelling

विकल्प 1 का मेल "must decide which… a reader will actually look for" से है; विकल्प 2 का "choose one form of each term and cross-refer the rest" से; विकल्प 3 का "it cannot judge which of them matters" से, वही विवेक जो गद्यांश मनुष्य indexer को देता है।
"The committee's report was studiously bland. Every finding was hedged, every recommendation qualified, and no official was named. Members later admitted that this was deliberate: a sharper report would have been rejected outright, while a dull one might be quietly implemented."

    1. stated with cautious qualifications
    2. surrounded by a row of bushes
    3. translated into another language
    4. removed from the official record

A — stated with cautious qualifications

"The new terminal has marble floors, a waterfall in the atrium and a ceiling forty metres high. It also has four working toilets for a peak-hour crowd of three thousand, and a single lift to the platform. One admires the ambition of the architect; one wonders whether anybody asked a passenger."

    1. unreservedly admiring
    2. gently ironic and critical
    3. angry and abusive
    4. neutral and purely factual

B — gently ironic and critical

    स्वर संरचना से बनता है: पहले भव्य विशेषताएँ, फिर शौचालयों और लिफ्ट की हवा निकालने वाली गिनती, फिर विनम्र स्वीकृति ("One admires the ambition") और उसके बाद चुभता प्रश्न ("one wonders whether anybody asked a passenger")।

"Every monsoon the same drains overflow at the same three junctions. The municipal engineers know which drains they are; a report naming them was submitted four years ago and has been renewed every year since. The desilting contract, however, is awarded in June, when the rain has already begun and the machinery can no longer reach the drains."

    1. The same three junctions overflow every monsoon.
    2. A report naming the drains was submitted four years ago.
    3. The desilting contract is awarded in the month of June.
    4. The flooding continues because of when the work is scheduled, not because its cause is unknown.

D — The flooding continues because of when the work is scheduled, not because its cause is unknown.
